Greetings from Pete Schartel
A former radio station owner wanabee who has seen his dream unfold by wearing
such varied hats as computer programmer, plumber, engineer, announcer, sales
person and even his least favorite: janitor. All talents picked up from previous
careers in insurance, publishing, construction and education.
History
On February 16, 1967 a group of Liberty area businessmen, led by George Bedinger,
established a new radio station on 1140 am. Billed as "Town and Country
Radio" and sporting the call letters KBIL, the new station played a mix
of popular and country hits.
Country ruled the 1140 airwaves between 1971 and 1978 under ownership of entertainer
Mack Sanders. During this time present station owner, Pete Schartel, was turned
down for employment by then station manager, Jimmy Dallas. (Look who's still
in radio, now.)
A change in ownership and call letters to KFIX brought local radio legend Mike Murphy to 1140. Playing adult contemporary music, KFIX had all the elements considered to be the mark of great radio, but lasted just over a year until owner Leonard Strauss pulled the plug.
The next two years brought two more owners, a change to KLDY and oldies!! Ratings started to climb, but 1140 took a back seat to then sister station 106.5.
In 1984 another change of ownership brought new call letters, KCXL and Urban Contemporary music. Studios were built near 63rd and Troost in Kansas City. All went well until March of 1992 when wire cutters and moving vans brought 1140 to an extended period of silence.
KCXL was returned to the air on November 21, 1994 by Alpine Broadcasting Corporation.
